Athlete Leadership

What makes Special Olympics great is our athletes. What makes us amazing is the leadership our athletes offer when they participate in the design and delivery of Special Olympics Louisiana.

Special Olympics Louisiana supports the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us” when it comes to including athletes in the planning and implementation of programming. If you compete with Special Olympics Louisiana, we invite you to share your ideas, volunteer at events, and help lead the movement.  To learn about volunteer opportunities, check out our volunteer portal.

Special Olympics Louisiana athletes currently serve in several leadership roles, including:

  • Board Members
  • Coaches
  • Team Captains
  • Day-Of Volunteers
  • Ambassadors (Public Speakers)
  • Athlete Input Council Members
  • Area Leadership Team Members
  • Health Ambassadors
  • And more…

In addition to the standard training we have for these roles, we also offer additional workshops and training materials if needed. Volunteers without disabilities can take these trainings as well. We also have disability awareness and inclusion training to help volunteers without disabilities lead inclusively alongside those with disabilities.
